Mrs. Micala McMurrian, age 77, most recently of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, passed from this life on August 3, 2025.

Born on January 10, 1948, in Washington, D.C., Micala was the daughter of the late Master Sargeant Lucien and Ruth Hamner.  Due to her father's many assignments in the U.S. Air Force, she lived in both Brussels, Belgium and Paris, France as a child before the family eventually settled in Louisiana. There, Micala achieved three postsecondary degrees, met her husband, began a family, and kicked off a lifelong career in education. She fully embraced Louisiana culture, especially its literature and its Cajun cuisine.

Micala pursued her passion for education with dedication, graduating from Northeast Louisiana University in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in English education, the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1983 with a master's degree in English, and her revered Louisiana State University in 1989 with a second master's in journalism. Geaux Tigers!

Micala's professional life was devoted to education, serving in various schools across Louisiana, Texas, and finally Florida for more than 40 years before retiring in Valrico, Florida. Over her career, she taught English, journalism, creative writing, literature, and social studies and was also a longtime yearbook advisor—her biggest passion.

Micala was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Robert McMurrian; and her parents.

She is survived by her sons: Scott (Christy) McMurrian of Hattiesburg, MS, and Kevin (Katrina) McMurrian of Franklin, TN; grandchildren: Scott Taylor (Lydia) McMurrian of New Albany, MS, Cassidy (Andrew) Barone of Littleton, CO, and Annie McMurrian of Marietta, GA; great-grandchild: Crew Barone of Littleton, CO; and her sister, Ruth (Ronnie) Hancock of Beaumont, TX.

Affectionately known as Nana to her grandchildren, Micala was an avid reader, a diehard LSU fan, a doting dog-Mom, and a loyal friend. She was of the Presbyterian faith. Micala will be remembered for her sharp wit and lovable sarcasm, her lifelong commitment to education, the many lives she touched through her career, and her love for her family.
