On Tuesday, January 23, 2023, Joe "Jody" Dewitt Gallaspy, II, beloved father, grandfather, and brother passed away at home at the age of 72.  He was born on July 24, 1950, to Joe Dewitt and Sara Fullilove Gallaspy in Bogalusa, Louisiana.

He is survived by a brother, William David (Janet) Gallaspy of New Augusta; two sons, Joe Dewitt "Josh" (Krista) Gallaspy III of Ocean Springs and Luke Mason (Casey) Gallaspy of Hattiesburg; and three grandchildren, Joe Dewitt Gallaspy IV of Madison, and Luke Mason Gallaspy II and Sara Mills Gallaspy, both of Hattiesburg.

Jody lived most of his early years in Jackson, Mississippi.  In 1968, he graduated from Wingfield High School where he ran track on the 4 x 400 relay team.  He later attended the University of Southern Mississippi.

Jody worked for over 30 years for the Social Security Administration.  He was instrumental in developing and installing the online process (EDIB) which allowed for online application for Social Security benefits.  After retirement, Jody was elected as Mayor of New Augusta and served a full term from 2017 to 2021.

Jody was very involved with his children.  He coached every youth soccer and baseball team for which his sons played in Meridian and Clinton.  He also served as commissioner of the baseball and soccer leagues in Clinton.   Jody's passions were sports and music, he loved attending concerts and sporting events with family and friends.  Our rolling stone gathered no moss.  He was also passionate about serving others and would continually seek out others to help and mentor.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2023 at New Augusta Presbyterian Church.  Visitation will be prior to the services from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
