Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Hickory Grove First Church of God in Richton for Mr. J.M. Conway, age 94, of Richton. Burial will be in the Buck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Conway was a lifelong resident of the Runnelstown/Buck Creek area and was preceded in death by parents, Bura and Ruth (Holliman) Conway; wife, Addie Mae (Underwood) Conway; daughter, Terry Ruth (Conway) Carpenter, and grandson, Michael Conway.  He is survived by one son, Kenneth (Debbie) Conway of Petal; and two daughters, Faye (Jimmy) Inman and Jean Conway of Richton, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with numerous nieces and nephews, and step grandchildren/great-grandchildren.

Mr. Conway graduated from Runnelstown School and married Addie Mae Underwood on December 2, 1950.  He was drafted into the U. S. Army during the Korean War and stationed at Fort Sill, Lawton, OK. While there he and his wife were instrumental in planting a Church of God in that area and the church is still in existence today.  He was the oldest living veteran in Perry County.

Mr. Conway grew up in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in the logging business and owned his own logging business. He later built the Conway Pole & Piling Company in New Augusta, MS.  Next to being a family man, his true passion was logging, farming, working on his farm and tending to the cattle.  He will always be remembered for loving and supporting his children, adoring his grandchildren and great grandchildren, supporting the schools and community, attending basketball or baseball games and supporting all the players, then helping and encouraging anyone that asked for his advice.

Mr. Conway attended Hickory Grove Church of God and served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years.  He had the most enjoyment in hiding the Easter Eggs each year at church and making sure all the children found equal amounts.  He was one of the founding members of the Southeast MS Livestock and served on their Board for many years. He received various awards through the years but never focused on collecting or displaying those awards because he wanted God to receive the glory and the people to receive the benefits of his labor. His mischievous nature and enjoyment at pulling pranks was known by all but his favorite hobbies included making cane syrup, fishing, deer hunting and he loved listening to the dogs on hot pursuit when he owned many hunting dogs years ago. Mr. Conway recently received the Quilt of Valor award presented by the Pine Belt Quilts of Valor Chapter.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2023, in the Hickory Grove First Church of God in Richton.
